The Australian government is supporting the development of an advanced radio communications production line in South Australia as part of the DEF129 uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) initiative.
The move marks a significant investment to advance the defence manufacturing sector in South Australia, with a focus on enhancing the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) uncrewed aerial systems.
In July 2024, the government disclosed plans to allocate in excess of A$100m ($62.72m) towards expanding the ADF inventory of UASs. Among the selected models is the domestically produced CorvoX by Sypaq Systems.
Codan Communications secured a $15m contract to incorporate the Sentry Mesh 6161 radio into the CorvoX for the ADF.
The Codan Communications’ facility in South Australia is expected to create up to 18 jobs. The team will focus on precision engineering tasks such as video encoding, equipment packaging for mesh and algorithms, and certification processes.
The communication system supporting the small UAS is expected to provide the ADF with scalable solutions and superior communications capabilities.
