The US Army has awarded a firm-fixed-price contract to AM General to deliver two Humvee 2-CT Hawkeye Mobile Howitzer Systems (MHS).
The systems will undergo characterisation testing with the US Army. Soft recoil technology (SRT) will be integrated onto the platforms.
AM General and its partner Mandus are responsible for the SRT integration.
SRT technology is used to reduce the firing loads for direct and indirect weapons systems, allowing combat systems to meet ‘emerging requirements’.
It lowers the total weight of the system, increasing agility and responsiveness.
According to the company, the technology is ready for deployment on the current weapons systems.

By GlobalDataAM General Engineering SVP and chief technology officer Regis Luther said: “AM General’s integration of Soft Recoil technology onto mobile platforms demonstrates our commitment to the innovation required to make future combat vehicles lighter, more survivable, and more lethal.
“We are honoured to support the US Army’s efforts to test and prove mobile howitzer systems.”
The Humvee 2-CT, which serves as the mobile platform for using the technology, will come with a standard 14,100lb gross vehicle weight, 205hp engine, and antilock braking system.
The high-mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle (Humvee) is a tactical vehicle designed and produced to replace the US Army’s current tactical vehicles in the 0.25t to 1.25t range.
The US Army is expected to conduct characterisation testing of the 2-CT Hawkeye MHS next year.
Hawkeye is a lightweight mobile weapon system (MWS) developed by AM General in collaboration with Mandus.
Meanwhile, AM General and Mandus will continue to refine the technology for integration of the SRT onto other mobile platforms.
The companies are already testing scalability with a 155mm prototype.
