The US Department of Defense (DoD) has awarded a contract to AirBoss Defense for the production of extreme cold vapour barrier boots (ECVBBs).
Under the deal, the company will manufacture up to 198,240 pairs of ECVBBs to be used by the US military in extreme cold weather environments.
Comprising an initial base year and one option year, the indefinite-delivery indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract is expected to be valued up to an aggregate amount of $51.5m, assuming all pairs of boots are sold.
Commonly known as bunny boots, the ECVBBs provide waterproof and mildew-resistant capabilities with encapsulated thermal insulation and extreme thermal ratings of -54°C (-65°F).
Currently, the new barrier boots are manufactured in a total of 36 size options, with 13 different sizes available in three widths.
AirBoss Defense has developed and produced the ECVBB that features an air valve design to relieve pressure when airborne.
