A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11970696B1) discloses a data storage system that utilizes immobilized double-stranded DNA oligomers on a surface array for data storage. Each strand of DNA has a photocleavable optical linker that, when exposed to light from an optical source, creates sticky ends for attaching data-encoded DNA cassettes. These cassettes can be introduced to the surface array and attached to the exposed sticky ends, allowing for the storage of data in a predetermined pattern. The system enables the attachment of additional data-encoded DNA cassettes to the existing ones, expanding the storage capacity.

The patent also includes details about the optical source used in the system, which can be a UV source or a digital light processor (DLP). Additionally, the system incorporates a mechanism for making the attachment between the sticky ends and data-encoded DNA cassettes permanent. The surface array consists of individually addressable pixels, with each pixel containing at least one strand of immobilized DNA. The system can accommodate millions of pixels, each ranging from 30 to 100 µm in size, allowing for a high-density data storage capability with precise addressing by the optical source.
