A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11952114B2) discloses a deployable device designed to collect situation awareness data with respect to a carrier aircraft. The deployable device, functioning as an aerial vehicle, includes recorder devices, data acquisition devices, and a control unit. While onboard the carrier aircraft, the device collects and stores data, and upon ejection, it is towed by the carrier aircraft while operating the data acquisition devices to gather information from an external observation angle. The control unit maneuvers the device to ensure optimal data collection during towing.

Furthermore, the deployable device can be released from the towing mechanism to operate independently as an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) following the carrier aircraft. It is equipped with propelling devices, wings that extend upon release, and various data acquisition tools such as cameras and radar. The device can autonomously determine conditions for ejection, receive instructions remotely, and adjust its flight path based on the carrier aircraft's maneuvers. Additionally, it serves as a backup unit for recording situation awareness data independently of the carrier aircraft's black box, ensuring comprehensive data collection and analysis for enhanced safety and monitoring capabilities in aviation operations.
