A recently filed patent (Publication Number: US20230314378A1) describes an ultrasonic testing device for non-destructively testing components. The device includes an ultrasonic testing head and a liquid nozzle with a liquid inlet and outlet. The inner surface of the liquid nozzle tapers towards the liquid outlet and has at least one liquid-guiding rib that protrudes inwards into a sound chamber in front of the ultrasonic testing head.

The patent claims various features of the ultrasonic testing device. Claim 2 specifies that the liquid-guiding rib extends into an edge region on the front of the ultrasonic testing head, while the central region on the front of the head remains free of the rib. Claim 3 states that the liquid nozzle can have multiple liquid-guiding ribs on its tapering inner surface. Claim 4 further specifies that the inner longitudinal edges of the liquid-guiding ribs are arranged at a distance from each other, creating a central region free of ribs. Claim 5 describes that the liquid-guiding ribs are arranged at regular angular intervals on the tapering inner surface of the liquid nozzle. Claim 6 states that the height of the liquid-guiding ribs decreases towards the liquid outlet, and claim 7 specifies that the inner longitudinal edges of the ribs run parallel to each other. Claim 8 mentions that the tapering inner surface of the liquid nozzle adjacent to the liquid outlet is free of liquid-guiding ribs. Claim 9 describes that the inner surface of the liquid nozzle is tapered according to a spline polynomial of degree 3 to 5. Claim 10 states that the liquid nozzle has an axial extent of less than 60 mm from the center of the ultrasonic testing device to the liquid outlet.

The patent also includes claims related to a testing system and a method for non-destructively testing a component. Claim 12 describes a testing system with a manipulation element, such as a robot arm, on which a tool with an ultrasonic testing device is arranged. Claim 13 outlines the method for non-destructively testing a component using the ultrasonic testing device, including generating ultrasonic waves, supplying a liquid flow through the liquid nozzle, and conducting the liquid flow along the inner surface of the nozzle with the aid of the liquid-guiding rib. Claim 14 specifies the additional step of rotating the liquid nozzle about its own axis during the liquid flow to carry the flow over the liquid-guiding rib.

The patent also mentions that the ultrasonic testing device and method can be specifically applied to testing fiber-reinforced plastic components (claims 15 and 16).
