Notably, the number of patent applications in the aerospace, defence & security industry was 11,351 in Q3 2024, versus 15,292 in the prior quarter. Filings were down 24% year-on-year and decrease 25% quarter-on-quarter. This compares to a 24% year-on-year decrease in patent grants and 25% decline in quarter-on-quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 21% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that the largest number of patents filed over the last quarter was by RTX with 883, followed by Safran with 567 and Boeing with 401.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 26% share of total patent filings

The largest share of patent filings in the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q3 2024 was in the US with 26%, followed by China (24%) and Japan (4%). The share represented by the US was 8% higher than the 18% share it accounted for in Q2 2024.
