The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has awarded a contract to defence contractor Saab for Giraffe 4A multi-function radar and artillery locating system Arthur.
Financial details of the order have not been disclosed by the company.
Under the contract, the company will deliver the modern ground-based multi-function system Giraffe 4A to the Swedish Armed Forces. In addition, Saab will carry out life extension of Arthur.
The development and maintenance of the artillery and weapon locating capability will enable the country’s armed forces to better tackle existing and future threats.
In the long run, the order will help create conditions for the armed forces’ long-range surveillance capability.
Work under the contract will be performed at the company’s Gothenburg facility. The company expects to start deliveries from next year.

Saab surveillance business area head Anders Carp said: “Our ground-based radar Giraffe 4A strengthens our customers’ capability to detect incoming threats, including tactical ballistic missiles. Tensions around us are increasing and the system gives our customers a world-class multi-function capability that helps to protect their interests.”
Giraffe 4A digital multi-channel system features an active electronically scanned array (AESA) technology based on gallium nitride (GaN).
The radar combines the battle-proven designs from the Arthur and Giraffe AMB product families. It is designed to act simultaneously for air surveillance and air defence mission, as well as warning and artillery locating tasks.
Saab’s Arthur weapon locating system can be deployed for a wide range of tasks such as counter-battery operations and fire control of artillery weapons, as well as provide warning of incoming fire to protect forces and civilians.
The company’s portfolio of radar and electronic warfare includes the airborne surveillance solution GlobalEye, the Gripen fighter sensor systems, and the Arexis self-protection system family.
