The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded a contract to Maxar Technologies’ company DigitalGlobe to create a Geospatial Cloud Analytics Hub (GCA Hub).
Under the deal, the company will provide an unclassified environment with multi-source content for geospatial Cloud analytics.
The hub will enable military and intelligence users to benefit from machine learning in order to derive insights at scale and make major decisions.
Another Maxar company MDA will be responsible for providing RADARSAT-2 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data and SAR data curation and processing tools.
DigitalGlobe’s commercially developed, Cloud-based analytics platform, Geospatial Big Data platform (GBDX), will also function as the hub’s foundation.
DigitalGlobe Unified Platform vice-president Dr Shay Har-Noy said: “DARPA’s requirements demonstrate the power of processing and interpreting large amounts of different kinds of geospatial data at scale.

By GlobalData“Our solution for DARPA leverages strategic investments we’ve already made for commercial customers, proves the utility of our Cloud-based platform, and will become foundational to helping defence and intelligence users to solve problems at scale in the future.”
The GCA Hub allows the analysts at the US Department of Defence (DoD) to apply government, commercial and open-source algorithms to geospatial data sources, including electro-optical (EO) imagery, SAR imagery, and automatic identification system (AIS) data.
This enables the analysts to make use of geospatial information at a large scale and understand what’s happening on Earth at any given time.
