India is set to participate in this year’s biennial Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Peace Mission Exercise for the first time.

To be conducted as part of SCO initiatives, this year’s joint exercise will be carried out by the Central Military Commission of Russia from 22 to 29 August at Chebarkul, Chelyabinsk.

During SCO Peace Mission Exercise 2018, the participating nations will carry out tactical level operations in an international counter insurgency or counter terrorism environment under SCO Charter.

The Indian soldiers participating in the exercise comprise a contingent of 200 personnel primarily composed of troops from infantry and affiliated arms and services, in addition to the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The contingent has undergone a strenuous training schedule, including firing, heliborne operations, combat conditioning, tactical operations and house intervention drills.

The staff phase of the SCO Peace Mission Exercise will be carried out between 22 August and 28 August this year.

During this phase, personnel will establish a Joint Staff Headquarters and conduct a staff exercise prior to the evolution of a joint operational plan.

On 29 August, the field training phase will be conducted and will involve live firing by air, attack helicopters, artillery, infantry combat vehicles and infantry weapons.

SCO Peace Mission Exercise 2018 has been designed to help strengthen mutual confidence, enhance interoperability and facilitate sharing of best practices among armed forces of the SCO nations.
