The US Department of Defense (DoD) has placed a new ammunition order for the delivery of Saab’s Carl-Gustaf man-portable weapon system.
Valued at Skr135m ($16m), the current order is placed under the terms of a contract originally announced in August 2014, which involved the delivery of the 84mm recoilless rifle system, known as a multi-role, anti-armour, anti-personnel weapon system (M3 MAAWS) in the US.
In addition, the DoD has placed the first order for the 84mm multi-target (MT) 756 round used in combat in urban areas and to debilitate an enemy undercover inside a building.
The MT 756 weapon uses a tandem charge to penetrate hardened structures and affect the targets indoors.
Saab North America president and CEO Michael Andersson said: “The Carl-Gustaf, with its broad range of munitions types, has repeatedly proven itself in the most demanding environments.
“With the addition of the MT 756 munition to the DoD inventory, warfighters will have even greater flexibility to customise the weapon and munitions load to their specific mission.”
