The US Army has awarded Raytheon a $235m modernisation task order to upgrade the Patriot air and missile defence system.
The current award is the first of five annual indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) task orders with a total investment of more than $2.3bn.

Raytheon’s Integrated Air and Missile Defense vice-president Tom Laliberty said: “The 14 Patriot partner nations share the cost of further improving the system through upgrades.
“As a result, all partner nations will be able to continue outpacing and defeating even the most advanced threats.”
Under the deal, Raytheon will be responsible for developing advanced methods to search, track, engage and defeat a large variety of evolving threats, such as tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and military aircraft.
The company will also help improve the Patriot’s ability to respond to advanced electronic countermeasures and conduct combat identification. The system’s interoperability with higher echelon systems will also be upgraded.
In addition, Raytheon will build advanced training aids and provide modernised hardware with enhanced reliability to help reduce life-cycle costs of the system.
Patriot is the company’s most advanced, tactical air and missile defence system, offering protection against a wide range of threats.
Work under the contract is estimated to be completed by 31 January 2023.
