The Fox Rapid Reaction Vehicle (RRV) is a member of the FOX range of light tactical vehicles being offered by Jankel Armouring (Jankel).
Jankel unveiled the latest Fox variant, RRV-x, during the 2017 Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) exhibition held in September 2017.
The Belgian Ministry of Defence placed a contract with Jankel for the supply of 108 Fox RRVs in January 2016. The vehicle was displayed by the Belgian Armed Forces during a military parade on the Belgian National Day in July 2017.
The Fox RRV can be used in border patrol, surveillance and reconnaissance, rapid response/first support, convoy protection, cargo/troop transport, and casualty evacuation missions.
Fox RRV design and features
Fox RRV-x is based on the chassis of Toyota Hilux light commercial vehicle, with custom improvements and automotive upgrades made by Jankel. It features a modular design, which enables multiple reconfigurations according to the requirements of customer. The reliable platform further offers superior off-road mobility and payload capacity.
The vehicle has a traditional layout, featuring an engine in the front, crew cab in the centre and troop/cargo compartment in the rear. The open-top vehicle measures approximately 5.6m-long and 1.8m-wide, and weighs approximately 4,500kg.
The vehicle offers seating for between four and six personnel, who can enter and exit the vehicle through four lateral doors. It also provides a dedicated space for the stowage of personal weapons.
The vehicle is fitted with standard equipment and systems, including forward and rear-mounted winches, a spare wheel, run-flat systems, a digital instrument panel, a modular dash panel, a pull-out laptop compartment, and infrared lighting.
The communications package comprises very high-frequency (VHF) and high-frequency (HF) communication systems, satellite phone and global positioning system (GPS) receiver kits, and associated antennae.
Armament and self-protection
The vehicle is installed with a main ring-mount and soft-mounts for 12.7mm/7.62mm machine gun or a 5.56mm machine gun or a 40mm automatic grenade launcher (AGL). It can also integrate forward post and cradle mounts for a 7.62mm GPMG or a 5.56mm gun.
The multiple weapon mounts at various locations on the vehicle allow for the carriage of a range of armament to make the RRV an ideal mobile fire support and tactical force protection platform.
The Fox RRV is fitted with removable modular armour kits to offer STANAG 4569 Level 1 protection against small arms fire, shell splinters, and hand grenades. The under-belly protection plate further ensures protection from anti-personnel improvised explosive devices (IEDs) under the hull.
The armoured side panels and doors, as well as the floor-mounted plate, can be mounted/dismounted by a crew of two in less than four hours. The forward hull is fitted with a bank of smoke grenade launchers for increased survivability.
Engine and mobility
The vehicle can be equipped with a 4.2L six-cylinder turbo-charged or a 4.5L V8 turbo-charged intercooled diesel or a 4.0L V6 petrol engine coupled to the automatic transmission. It can also be integrated with RF Safe-Stop, a state-of-the-art, non-destructive, vehicle stopping system.
The Fox RRV can be transported by air internally by CH-47 Chinook helicopter, C-130 Hercules and Airbus A400M aircraft. It offers a ground clearance of 260mm for superior cross-country agility and mobility across uneven terrains.
The vehicle has a maximum speed of 170km/h and a typical range of 900km. The optional fuel tank installed aboard the vehicle can extend the range up to 1,300km.
The RRV can climb a vertical obstacle of 300mm and ford a depth of 700mm. The approach and departure angles of the vehicle are 40° and 45° respectively.
