Rila 4×4 is a mine-resistant ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicle produced by International Armored Group (IAG). The vehicle was displayed at the Defence and Security Equipment (DSEI) 2017 exhibition held in London in September 2017. It is also offered in military ambulance, riot-control and cargo transport configurations.

IAG received an order from an undisclosed customer for the supply of Rila MRAP vehicles in the second half of 2017.

Rila 4×4 MRAP vehicle design and features

The Rila MRAP vehicle features an all-welded monocoque steel hull based on the chassis of Iveco Trakker truck. The traditional layout integrates engine in the front, crew cab in the middle and troop compartment at the rear.

The vehicle can carry up to 12 fully equipped infantrymen on military grade certified blast attenuation seats, in a 4×4 configuration. It is also offered in a 6×6 configuration, which can accommodate up to 14 personnel.

The crew, including a driver and a commander, are seated on individual seats in the front, while troops are accommodated on two rows of inward facing seats at the rear. Crew can enter/exit the vehicle through doors provided on either sides of the hull, while a large door at the rear hull is used for ingress/egress of troops.

The forward crew cab is protected by a two-piece bulletproof glass windshield. Each door is fitted with a bulletproof glass window, while either side of the troop section is provided with five small glass vision blocks with firing ports.

The rear hull is also fitted with three glass vision blocks along with firing ports, enabling the troops to aim and fire their individual weapons.

Armament

The MRAP vehicle can be installed with a one-man open-top turret or a remotely operated weapon station (ROWS). The ROWS can be mounted with a machine gun of up to 12.7mm calibre. The weapon is operated under armour to increase protection for the gunner.

Self-protection features of Rila

The vehicle offers STANAG 4569 Level IV protection against 7.62mm armour piercing and NATO Ball rounds, as well as 12.7mm armour piercing rounds, 14.5mm rounds and 20mm fragmented simulated projectiles (FSP).

The vehicle can survive a blast of 8kg anti-tank (AT) mine under any wheel or track location and centre of the hull. It can also resist the explosion force generated under any wheel by a 10kg AT mine. The ballistic protection can be increased according to the requirements of customers.

The V-shaped bottom of the hull further increases the vehicle and crew survivability by deflecting the blast impact of a landmine or an improvised explosive device (IED) away from the vehicle.

Rila MRAP vehicle engine and mobility

The vehicle is powered by a 12.9L V6 turbocharged six-cylinder diesel engine coupled to an automatic transmission. The engine has a rated power output of 380hp and can generate a torque of 810Nm at 1,200rpm-2,100rpm. The vehicle can be fitted with either a 12V or a 24V electrical system.

The vehicle is delivered in either left hand drive (LHD) or right hand drive (RHD) configuration according to customer requirements. It offers high ground clearance and off-road mobility across different terrains.
