L3 Technologies has secured a contract to produce unmanned aerial system (UAS) receive (UR) technology solutions for the US Army’s Apache Manned/Unmanned Teaming – eXpanded Capabilities (MUMT-X) helicopter programme.

The latest $97m contract award follows the completion of a 2015 MUMT-X communications upgrade contract, under which L3 delivered systems for high-speed transmissions of wideband video and data.

Under the contract, L3 will supply tested and certified Apache MUMT-X above rotor UAS UR technology to support MUMT operations and air-to-air-to-ground (AAG) line-of-sight data links.

The MUMT-X enables communications and data teaming between manned and unmanned aircraft to provide the Apache AH-64E with a transformational combat capability.

The capability is claimed to be more robust, lighter and less expensive than the original UAS control system.

L3 president and chief operating officer Christopher E Kubasik said: “Our performance on the MUMT-X development programme illustrates our commitment to providing innovative technology that meets the needs of the warfighter.

Work under the contract will be performed by L3 Communication Systems-West.

The Boeing-built AH-64 Apache is a multi-role combat helicopter that is currently in service with several countries, including Egypt, Greece, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, the Netherlands, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the UAE, and the UK.

To date, more than 2,200 AH-64 Apache attack helicopters have been delivered to the US Army and other nations.
