Germany’s decision to replenish its Patriot missile stockpile with a $478m (€439m) contract for GEM-T interceptors from Raytheon reflects a broader European push for coordinated defence measures.
The deal, facilitated by Nato’s procurement process, also exemplifies the expanding financial cooperation among European allies.
Germany’s procurement, facilitated by the Nato Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA), is designed to replenish Germany’s depleted missile inventory after its military aid to Ukraine.
Germany recently supported Ukraine by delivering eight Leopard 1A5 main battle tanks.
The contract is emblematic of an increasingly collaborative European defence landscape, with Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway stepping in to help finance the acquisition.
“Not only can we better support the missile inventories for these European partners, but also strengthen our cooperation, their interoperability, and their contribution to an essential NATO mission.”,” said Tom Laliberty, president of Land and Air Defense Systems at Raytheon. “Our customers are already realising the benefits of bundled, multinational procurement of Patriot missiles through NSPA, including the economies that offer greater affordability.”

By GlobalDataBeyond the tactical advantage of bolstering Germany’s missile defences, the partnership reflects a concerted effort by Nato members to enhance interoperability and streamline defence procurement—a focus for the alliance as it adapts to an increasingly complex security environment. The NSPA’s role in negotiating and bundling this contract highlights the agency’s growing importance in the European defence infrastructure.
Stacy A. Cummings, NSPA’s General Manager, emphasised the deal’s strategic importance. “This contract demonstrates once again that NSPA, as NATO’s lead organisation for multinational acquisition, support, and sustainment, delivers effective and cost-efficient multinational solutions to nations while reinforcing European industrial capacities.”
Raytheon and MBDA Deutschland have previously collaborated to advance European missile production. In 2022, both entities drafted a roadmap to produce Patriot GEM-T missiles in Germany, enhancing the system’s availability and capabilities for Nato allies until 2048.
The Spanish engineering business Sener has recently supported this initiative, which will contribute to manufacturing missile components at its Madrid facilities. The collaboration reflects an expansion of GEM-T production capacity across Europe.
The GEM-T missiles, part of the Patriot Advanced Capability 2 (PAC-2) series, are components of Europe’s air and missile defence network. As the backbone of defence for eight European nations and Ukraine, the Patriot system is increasingly relied upon to counter the evolving threat of ballistic missiles, drones, and aircraft.
As Nato continues to navigate a troubled geopolitical landscape, the collective investment in defence capabilities shows the organisation’s commitment to safeguarding the region’s stability.
