The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has extended its contract with the British defence prime Babcock to maintain, repair and manage the land vehicle assets gifted to Ukraine.

This framework agreement with the MoD, means that as well as maintaining military vehicles and equipment, Babcock will manage the supply chain and spares while continuing to train the Ukrainian military to conduct the repairs themselves.

Britain aims to ensure that Ukraine’s Armed Forces are able to keep their vehicles available for operations where needed, returning them to to service as quickly as possible.

The UK is one of the leading donors to Ukraine, alongside the US and Germany. As of 8 July 2024, the island nation has provided £12.7bn ($16.39bn) in overall support to Ukraine, of which £7.6bn is for military aid.

Britain’s war stocks have been depleted by the gifting of various and numerous platforms formerly in its armed forces inventory. In the first year of the conflict, the British Army donated nearly 200 surplus vehicles including six CVRT Stormer variants fitted with the Starstreak anti-air missile, and more than 120 logistics support vehicles. The latest UK package, and the first of the new Labour Government’s military aid, included 40 de-mining vehicles among artillery, missiles and boats.

Babcock has served at the heart of British military support to Ukraine. Previously, the government awarded the company a £50m ($64.5m) contract  in July 2023 to assist with Ukraine’s military land assets, sustaining and managing its armoured vehicles, including the Challenger 2 tanks and tracked combat vehicle reconnaissance.

Moreover, just over a month before Babcock’s contract extension with the MoD, the company established an engineering facility in Ukraine, dedicated to the repair and overhaul of military vehicles in collaboration with Ukraine Defence Industries, a state-owned defence holding company.

“Ukraine’s military need their critical defence assets to be operational; this contract extension enables Babcock to get vehicles and equipment back onto operations as quickly as possible,” said David Lockwood, Babcock CEO.
