Hensoldt, known for its radar solutions, has signed a deal worth more than €100m to equip Latvia and Slovenia with TRML-4D radars.

As part of the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI), spearheaded by Germany, these systems will bolster the air defence capabilities of the Baltic and Balkan nations.

Slovenia has also purchased the IRIS-T SLM medium-range air defence system from Diehl Defence through the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI), following a programme agreement signed with Germany in December 2023.

The TRML-4D radar is built on AESA technology. It can detect and track up to 1,500 targets within a radius of 250km and offers precision in identifying airborne threats, including cruise missiles, drones, and conventional aircraft. Its performance has been exemplified in live tests, notably in Latvia.

Latvia’s defence budget is set to grow by 70% by 2028, reaching nearly $1.7bn, driven by heightened security concerns following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The operational concept of Latvia’s armed forces is focused on preparing a well-drilled infantry force to defend its own territory and that of the wider Baltic region, with the presumption that it shall be supported and reinforced by NATO states under collective defence, as highlighted by GlobalData’s “Latvia Defense Market 2023-2028” report.

Oliver Dörre, CEO of HENSOLDT, emphasised the significance of this contract amidst the growing demand for air defence solutions across Europe. “The pent-up demand in European air defence is enormous. We have already made so much progress with the expansion of our production capacity that we can already supply all customers in record time.”

HENSOLDT will also deliver six additional TRML-4D radars to Ukraine, enhancing the country’s air defence capabilities as part of an order exceeding €100m.

Beyond its immediate impact on Latvia and Slovenia, deploying TRML-4D radars signifies a broader alignment within European defence architecture. With over 80 air defence radar systems contracted under ESSI, HENSOLDT continues to play a role in fortifying Europe’s collective security framework.

HENSOLDT’s portfolio, including SPEXER short-range radar and passive Twinvis radar systems, reinforces its role as a partner in safeguarding infrastructures and operational environments. These systems are components of Germany’s NNbS air defence system and are central in protecting maritime and aerial domains.
