A new helmet-mounted display system has been integrated into the US Army Flight School, giving students improved visual resolution to enhance the quality and realism of training exercises.
L-3 Communication’s Advanced Helmet Mounted Display (AHMD) will be integrated with the US Army Flight School XXI programme’s Reconfigurable Collective Training Devices.

L-3 Communication’s vice president of army programmes, Lenny Genna, says the helmets provide pilots with a 360-degree field-of-regard of out-of-the-window imagery and systems symbology, enabling crews to realistically view their surrounding cockpit instrumentation.
“Helmet-mounted displays have proven their effectiveness in supporting the US Army Aviation Warfighting Center’s conduct of large-scale, simulation-based aviation training exercises, which are conducted over geo-specific visual databases of areas in Iraq and Afghanistan to which units are preparing to deploy,” he says.
“The integration of L-3’s AHMDs into these exercises will further enhance the quality and training realism of these major events.”
The display, which attaches to student’s own helmets, allows ease of movement and improved comfort and replaces the existing helmet-mounted displays which have been in use since 2005.
