Through the British Ambassador to Lebanon, Hamish Cowell, the UK has provided various Land Rover spare parts worth £2m ($2.53m) to the Lebanese Army.
The 60 tonne package arrived at the Lebanese Armed Forces’ (LAF) logistics base in Kfarshema on 28 March, 2024. It comprises 225 engines, 737 brand new tyres, and essential Land Rover spare parts that will facilitate the servicing, repairs, and maintenance of over 440 military vehicles.
Notably, this package follows another donation of Land Rover spares worth more than £400,000 to the LAF throught the UK’s Conflict, Stability and Security Fund, handed over on 30 May 2023.
Ultimately, Cowell noted that the latest package will help to support the Lebanese Army in its efforts to secure its borders in a contentious region.
Leabnon has a strained relationship with Israel, which has occupied parts of southern Lebanon for two decades until 2000. The conflict between Israel and the Iranian-backed, Lebanese Shia Islamist group Hezbollah – which established because of a need to fight Israel’s occupation of Lebanon – also incites violence along its border with Israel, known as the ‘Blue Line’. Moreover, South Lebanon is home to Palestine refugee camps, which have given rise to the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and other militia groups.
The conflict between Israel and Lebanon started when Israel invaded Lebanon to attack the PLO, whereupon the Israeli Army laid siege to Beirut. The activities of these militant groups also add to the country’s volatile security situation, which is weighed down by the burden of Palestinian and Syrian refugees on its economy.

By GlobalData“The LAF plays a critical role… in safeguarding Lebanon and its people amid the prevailing challenges, especially with the ongoing cross border fighting in South Lebanon,” Cowell observed. “The equipment is vital for the operations of the Land Border Regiments tasked with securing Lebanon’s borders and combating smuggling and terrorist activities.”
According to the leading intelligence consultancy GlobalData, the Lebanese Army currently operates 100 Land Rover Defender 90 armoured multi-role vehicles that were acquired from Britain in 2021. It is curious that the British packages offer enough spares for quadruple the number of Land Rover vehicles that the LAF has in its inventory.
Alongside its limited Land Rover fleet, the Army also operates 1,450 various US-made Humvee armoured personnel carriers, according to GlobalData’s account of the Army’s inventory, procured between 2008 and 2022 from the Indiana-based supplier, AM General.
