A newly granted patent (Publication Number: US11920995B2) discloses a drive shaft monitoring system designed to monitor the twist or torque of a drive shaft. The system comprises two coded discs, each with multiple slots or recesses evenly distributed in a circumferential direction, allowing light to pass through. At least two independent light sensor assemblies are positioned in connection with the slots or recesses of each coded disc. The system is configured to function with a flywheel sensor or existing measurements, with a processing unit capable of calculating clutch slip.

Furthermore, the drive shaft monitoring system includes a support structure that positions the light sensor assemblies in relation to the coded discs and the drive shaft without direct contact. The system also features a high-resolution incremental encoder for calibration purposes and an incremental encoder at the engine's free end for measuring twist or torque and torsional vibrations over the engine's crankshaft. Additionally, the system is equipped with processing units capable of calculating various parameters such as revolutions per minute, shaft torsional angle, shaft torque, shaft power, shaft misalignment, and shaft eccentricity. The processing unit can analyze measurements from the light sensor assemblies to determine the shaft's torsion angle accurately. The coded discs have reference slots that allow the passage of light, enhancing the monitoring system's efficiency and accuracy.
