BAE Systems has delivered 5,500 Headborne Energy Analysis and Diagnostic Systems (HEADS) to the US Programme Executive Office Soldier.
The HEADS helmets, which are due to be distributed to the US Army’s 4th Infantry Division, will help scientists analyse and understand the forces soldiers sustain during impact and blast events that may lead to brain injury.
Mounted inside the helmet, the lightweight HEADS incorporate accelerometer and pressure sensor technology that can detect and record the forces sustained by soldiers during combat activity.
The data may be used to build better protective systems and to establish a body of data to accelerate research for the diagnosis and treatment of mild traumatic brain injury.
