The US Army’s Communications and Electronics Command has awarded a $2.4bn vehicular intercom systems (VIS-X) contract to the Northrop Grumman and Cobham joint venture (NGCI).

The joint venture will manufacture and deliver the digital communication networks VIS-X Systems over a ten-year period.

The VIS-X system aids communications between vehicles in theatre. It provides the crew with increased control of the on-board and external communication assets, connection to future internet protocol (IP), VoIP services and IP radios.

NGCI will deliver 500 VIS-X systems a month for the first year, with scheduled delivery of 2,000 systems in following years.

VIS-X can be used in both new production and legacy vehicle platforms. The equipment will be used by troops in Humvee, Abrams and Bradley tanks.
