DroneGun Mk4 is a rugged, handheld counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) developed by the Australian defence company DroneShield.
The company launched DroneGun Mk4 in April 2023 as a new addition to its DroneGun C-UAS portfolio that includes the long-range DroneGun Tactical and the ultra-lightweight DroneGun Mk3. While DroneGun Tactical and DroneGun Mk3 weigh 7kg and 2.1kg respectively, including the battery in these measurements, the DroneGun Mk4, weighing 3.2kg with battery is a striking balance between size and effectiveness.
DroneGun Mk4 has not been authorised by the US Federal Communications Commission for either sale or lease to any persons or entities, including at state or local government agencies within the US. Under current federal law, it can only be sold and leased to the US government and its relative agencies.
DroneGun Mk4 design and features
DroneGun Mk4 is a pistol-shaped drone jammer measuring 660mm long, 356mm wide and 213mm high.
Its improved ingress protection IP67-rated rugged design allows for reliable operations of the system in harsh environments and in temperatures ranging from -20°C to 55°C.
It can also be used in combination with the company’s other products such as RfPatrol, a non-emitting wearable UAS detection device, and the DroneSentry stationary multi-sensor detection system.
DroneGun Mk4 is a fully integrated C-UAS that features top-and-bottom Picatinny rails together with several quick-disconnect sling attachment points, allowing for easy adoption to different operational conditions.
Intuitive and easy-to-use controls allow for rapid deployment of the system. It features visual LED indicators ‘ON’ for enabled bands and ‘FLASH’ when disrupting. LEDs can also be disabled if needed.
The C-UAS incorporates an advanced waveform design to deliver superior performance relative to its size and weight. The integrated electronic modules make the system ready for immediate operation out of the box, without requiring any software updates.
DroneGun Mk4 battery details
The power consumption of the drone jammer is optimised with the use of the Nato-standard advanced battery, which increases the disruption range and effectiveness of the system.
The handled C-UAS device operates on a quick-release, rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a startup time of less than three seconds. The device can continuously operate for more than one hour on a single charge. The battery pack supports pass-through charging.
DroneGun Mk4 C-UAS performance
DroneGun Mk4 is effective against a wide range of frequencies, including industrial, scientific, and medical bands, as well as global navigation satellite services frequency bands.
The portable system can disrupt the control, navigation and live-video streaming of multiple drones simultaneously. Its drone defeat capabilities don’t include protocol manipulation or cyber tactics, but are based on non-kinetic jamming for controlled management of aerial threats.
The disruption triggered by the C-UAS may lead to either a vertically controlled landing of the target UAS on the spot, or a return to the operator or the point of its origin. Additionally, the disruption in radiofrequency can interfere with live-streaming of the video by the target UAS, stopping intelligence collection by the UAS operator controller.
Advantages of DroneGun Mk4
DroneGun Mk4 is more effective in a wider range of environmental conditions than its predecessors. With its compact design, the counter-drone system provides increased disruption performance, while ensuring effective directionality and a safe environment for the operator.
The familiar form factors of the device include an improved pistol grip, safety selector switch, trigger assembly and a quick-release battery function.
The protective components of the system can also be easily serviced and replaced on-field.
