The US Army’s guided multiple-launch rocket system (GMLRS) has been successfully test fired 92km by Lockheed Martin.
The test, which was designed to test recent reach and accuracy improvements, saw the GMLRS rocket successfully fired from a high-mobility artillery rocket system (HIMARS) launcher, the newest of MLRS family of launchers.
The combat-proven GMLRS is the US military’s long-range rocket artillery round specifically designed to destroy high-priority targets at ranges of 70km and above. The rocket system can be employed in both urban and non-urban environments and can be operated in all climate and light conditions.
HIMARS can engage artillery, air defence missiles, trucks, light armour and personnel carriers by launching its missiles and escaping from the launch area before being located by the enemy forces.
The recent test carried out at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, demonstrated rocket and launcher reliability, as well as the performance of system software.
