Bittium Wireless has been awarded a new purchase order to deliver its handheld and vehicular radios for the Finnish Defence Forces.
The estimated value of this order is approximately $5.46m (€5.3m), which is inclusive of value added tax (VAT).
As part of the new purchase order, the company will supply its Bittium Tough software defined radio (SDR) handheld and vehicular devices that will provide enhanced broadband tactical communication capability to the forces.
Delivery and fielding of the new SDR sets and other related equipment is expected to commence later this year.
The award comes as a continuation of a previous contract awarded to Bittium in 2018.
The initial order included an additional option for purchasing more tactical radios, along with other related accessories, system management, and training support.

By GlobalDataThe latest award is the first contract option being exercised by the Finnish Defence Forces.
Finnish Army Command signals inspector colonel Antti Tunkkari said: “The procurement will support continuing the national development of SDR technology and fitting the radios as part of the Army M18 C5 system and of the Finnish Defence Forces’ radio equipment family.
“The procurement also ensures the field radio development progress, utilisable and adaptation in all services, and in establishments subordinated to the Defence Command.”
Once procured, the new radio sets will gradually replace the Finnish Defence Forces’ existing analogous field radios.
The new devices are expected to deliver comparatively better performance than the previous-generation digital tactical radios.
According to Bittium, the new Tough SDR radios can be integrated with the company’s SDR-based Tactical Wireless IP Network, or TAC WIN, system which is already in use with the Finnish military forces.
The integration will further improve the overall performance of the radios throughout their lifecycle.
