India has approved Rs3bn ($63.8m) in funds for the procurement of armoured and bullet proof vehicles for the country’s paramilitary troops.
India’s defence minister P Chidambaram said the Union home ministry sanctioned 119 TATA light armoured troop carriers (LATC) worth Rs499m ($10.6m) and 98 bulletproof Mahindra Rakshaks and three LATCs at a cost of Rs379.7m ($8m), according to dnaindia.com.
The deal also includes night vision devices for rifles, 146 automatic grenade launchers and 47,030 grenades from Rosoboron Export of Russia as well as laser range finders from a Slovenian company Fotono.
In the recent months, India has placed orders across the world for new weapons, bulletproof jackets, riot gear and armoured vehicles, state-of-the-art SIG rifles, automatic grenade launchers and other related ammunition.
