BAE Systems has developed a new bullet-proof material known as Liquid Armour that will provide enhanced ballistic protection for soldiers on the battlefield.
Liquid Armour is specifically designed to provide soldiers increased protection with reduced mass, wider area cover, greater manoeuvrability and easy integration with other systems.
It uses the unique properties of shear thickening fluids, which lock together when subjected to a force, to enhance existing energy-absorbing materials like Kevlar.
The technology can also be integrated into standard Kevlar body armour to provide greater ease of movement in combat situations with a reduction in overall thickness of up to 45%.
Trials conducted at the BAE Systems Advanced Technology Center in Filton have shown that Liquid Armour allows thinner-than-standard armour to withstand equivalent levels of force.
BAE Systems has already demonstrated a prototype of the technology to the UK Ministry of Defence.
