The US Department of Defense (DoD) has announced additional security assistance worth $270m to help Ukraine repel Russian forces.
Acting Pentagon Press secretary Todd Breasseale said the package includes $175m of presidential drawdown of security aid recently announced by President Joe Biden and $95m in Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) funds.
The latest package is the 16th presidential drawdown of equipment from DoD stocks for Ukraine since August 2021.
This will allow Ukraine to acquire additional weapon systems and equipment, including four high mobility artillery rocket systems (HIMARS), along with ammunition, and four command post vehicles.
Additional anti-armour weapons, 36,000 rounds of 105mm ammunition, spare parts, and other equipment are also part of the package.
The new announcement also marks the beginning of a contracting process to deliver more capabilities to Ukraine’s Armed Forces under the USAI.

By GlobalDataAs part of the initiative, the US will buy capabilities from industries instead of DoD inventories.
Under the USAI, Ukraine will receive AEVEX Aerospace’s 580 Phoenix Ghost tactical uncrewed aerial systems, reported Reuters, citing White House spokesman John Kirby.
The country is also considering the option of delivering US-made fighter jets to Ukraine, Kirby added.
Press secretary Breasseale said the US has been engaging with allies to strengthen Ukraine’s capabilities amid evolving threats.
Since the onset of Russia’s Ukraine invasion on 24 February, the US has pledged nearly $7.6bn in security aid to the war-hit nation.
The assistance includes 16 HIMARS systems, more than 1,400 Stinger anti-aircraft systems, 6,500 Javelin anti-armour systems, and 700 Switchblade tactical uncrewed aerial systems, among other weapon systems and equipment.
Earlier this month, the US DoD announced its 15th presidential drawdown of assistance worth $400m for Ukraine.
