Lockheed Martin has delivered the first Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) M270A2 launcher to the US Army.

The company handed over the upgraded version of the mobile rocket launching system in a ceremony at the Precision Fires Center of Excellence in Camden, Arkansas.

A Joint All Domain Operations (JADO) enabling heavy-tracked mobile launcher, the M270A2 can be used to strike enemy artillery, air defence concentrations, trucks, light armour and personnel carriers located at greater distances.

It can be transported by C-17 and C-5 aircraft.

The mobile system can fire missiles and relocate at high speed, minimising the risk of damages from retaliatory strikes by adversaries.

Lockheed Martin is modernising the launchers in partnership with the Red River Army Depot.

The upgrade works will enable the US Army and partner nations to use M270-series launcher systems through to 2050.

Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control Precision Fires vice-president Jay Price said: “This delivery represents a significant milestone for Lockheed Martin as the modernised system will support the Army and allied partners for decades to come.

“Our award-winning Camden facility continues to produce world-class vehicles, and this newest M270A2 launcher will continue our legacy of combat-proven reliability.”

Last month, Lockheed Martin delivered the first five Sentinel A4 radars to the US Army.
