Iran has filed a lawsuit against Russia at the International Court of Justice for not complying with its commitments on the agreement over delivery of S-300 air defence systems, Iranian ambassador to Russia Seyed Mahmoud Reza Sajjadi has said.
“Legally, we believe the shipment of the S-300 system is not subject to the UN Security Council resolution so we filed our lawsuit, hoping the International Court ruling would help Russia carry out the supplies,” he added.
Russia cancelled the $800m bilateral contract with Iran to provide five S-300 missiles, which was signed in 2007, due to the UN Security Council’s sanctions on the nation.
The high-precision S-300 air defence system is an advanced mobile system capable of shooting down aircraft and cruise missiles from a distance of 150km.
In June 2010, a US-engineered sanctions resolution against Iran was imposed by the UN Security Council (UNSC) contesting the possible military nature of its nuclear program.
