India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has tested an extended range version of Pinaka rocket system.
The test was conducted at Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha.
During the test, a total of 25 Enhanced Pinaka Rockets were fired from a Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) at targets located at different ranges. The enhanced range version can destroy targets at distances up to 45km.
The flight path of the missiles was tracked by range instruments including Telemetry, Radar and Electro Optical Tracking System deployed by ITR & Proof and Experimental Establishment (PXE).
According to a Ministry of Defence statement, the mission met all its objectives.
Pinaka rocket system was jointly developed by the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL). Economic Explosives Limited in Nagpur manufactured the rockets.

In September last year, DRDO transferred Authority Holding Sealed Particulars (AHSP) responsibility of Pinaka weapon system to the Directorate General of Quality Assurance (DGQA).
It was regarded as a key step to support the production of Pinaka rockets and associated equipment.
In a separate development, DRDO also test-fired enhanced range versions of indigenously developed 122mm Caliber Rocket from a MBRL. The mission involved testing four enhanced range version of 122mm rockets for Army applications.
This rocket system has a range of around 40km and will eventually replace the existing 122mm Grad rockets.
