AirBoss Defense Group (ADG) has closed the acquisition of 100% ownership of technology company BlackBox Biometrics (B3) for a purchase price of up to $27m.
B3 is the developer of the Blast Gauge System, which is a set of three lightweight wearable sensors that measure blast overpressure.
It is designed to monitor all personnel exposed to blasts, inform safety protocols to lower risk and develop preventative safety measures.
The devices are already deployed with the US Special Forces, the US Army and the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams in the country.
B3 has been working on testing and enhancing its personnel mounted monitoring systems with technology development agencies such as the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and Marine Corps Systems Command (MARCORSYSCOM).
The acquisition will enable ADG to own B3’s technology and market its solutions.

By GlobalDataSince 2018, ADG portfolio company Critical Solutions International (CSI) has served as the exclusive worldwide distributor for the B3 Blast Gauge System.
AirBoss noted that ADG will merge B3 with CSI to form a newly launched Systems Solutions Division.
The new division will focus on the development and delivery of integrated solutions supporting troop and first responder safety.
B3 president and CEO Matt Boccia will lead the new Systems Solutions Division. B3’s headquarters and primary manufacturing and research and development (R&D) functions will remain in Rochester, New York, US.
ADG has paid $7m in cash and will pay the remaining $20m in royalties over eight years.
The remaining sum will be paid based on revenues earned by ADG from B3 products.
In October 2018, the US DoD awarded a contract to AirBoss Defense to produce extreme cold vapour barrier boots (ECVBBs).
