The UAE and Qatari armed forces have begun a joint air, sea and land military exercise, known as Peace Shield 1/2012, in a bid to boost Gulf security and stability.
The UAE armed forces’ third set of reported joint operations, the Peace Shield 1/2012 military exercise is part of a series of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) armed forces exercises to enhance joint military operations.
In a statement, the armed forces said: "The exercise will focus on planning and executing joint military operations, as well as the operational procedures of command and control on the ground; [in addition to] the enhancement of leadership skills of the command and control centre operators and military readiness of GCC personnel."
The Peace Shield 1/2012 exercise will see participation of various assets, including weapons belonging to the main branches of UAE and Qatari armies, according to Emirates News Agency (WAM).
UAE military spokesperson major general Rashad Mohammed Salem Al Saadi said: "We are getting more and more prepared and this event enabled us to better our performance on the battlefield and concentrate on joint operations areas that needed more work."
The Peninsula Shield Force, a part of GCC joint military forces, has conducted Islands of Loyalty war-game involving air, ground and naval forces in early 2012.
