Israel-based defence company Elbit Systems has introduced a portable tactical satellite communications (SATCOM) system that will provide the armed forces with on-the-move secure communication capabilities.
The E-LynX-Sat system includes a mobile terminal weighing less than 1kg that interfaces with Elbit Systems’ E-LynXTM Software Defined Radio (SDR) solution to enable communications.
Equipped with miniature phased-array antennas and unique satellite communication modem, E-LynX-Sat uses standard Ka and Ku-band geostationary satellites to enable secure transmission.
The solution is also integrated with beam steering, error correction software and data compression protocols.
Particularly, E-LynX-Sat can be used by infantry and manoeuvring forces to maintain secured on-the-move, voice and data communication services.
The solution enables communication across all geographic locations and terrain types, over ranges of hundreds of kilometres.

By GlobalDataElbit Systems C4I and cyber division senior vice-president Oren Sabag said: “The access to robust long-range voice and data communications is a critical operational capability for Infantry and manoeuvring forces.
“Until now this capability required the use of costly and heavy SATCOM equipment that did not interface smoothly with their tactical radio or command and control systems, limiting their adoption and effectiveness.”
Recently, the company demonstrated the system during the British Army’s Warfighting Experiment 2020.
Sabag added: “Overcoming major challenges in military networking, including size and weight reduction as well as automatic tracking, this SATCOM add-on solution offers a significant improvement of the operational effectiveness to the growing customer base of the E-LynX SDR solution.”
Last month, BAE Systems partnered with Elbit Systems of America, a subsidiary of the Israeli firm, to develop advanced operational technologies for combat vehicles.
