Cougar vehicle

Selex ES has demonstrated its low-cost generic vehicle architecture (GVA) system implementation at the UK Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) Defence Vehicle Dynamics (DVD) 2013 event at Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedford, UK.

Designed to cost-effectively render a platform’s mission system compatible with the MoD’s GVA configuration, Selex ES GVA system was displayed in the form of a conversion solution for the UK Army’s protected mobility (PM) vehicle fleet.

The solution was demonstrated on a Cougar vehicle; it enables replacement of the vehicle’s current crew displays with more compact, high-performance GVA HMI compliant displays, while adapting the existing sensor suite to use advantages of the GVA digital video standards.

Applicable to both modernisation and new vehicle procurement programmes, the system’s modular software based approach also facilitates installation of greater level of functionality compared with currently fielded system.

Selex ES Land and Naval Systems capability vice-president Ray Hopkins said the cost-efficient implementation of a GVA compliant mission system solution for new platforms and conversion of current mission equipment fits required comprehensive systems capabilities and vast technical expertise.

"Our existing equipment footprint and experience in providing integrated operational support solutions ensures that Selex ES can make a significant contribution towards the British Army’s future plans for integration of its PM fleet into its overall equipment capability."

"Our existing equipment footprint and experience in providing integrated operational support solutions, combined with our GVA systems integration expertise and platform independence, ensures that Selex ES can make a significant contribution towards the British Army’s future plans for integration of its PM fleet into its overall equipment capability," Hopkins said.

Transformation of PM fleet to GVA compliance is expected to bring the army a range of operational and ownership benefits costs, including lowered training costs due to standardisation of the human machine interface (HMI), and reduced support costs as a result of improved equipment coherence.

The conversion also offers the ability to easily scale the platform’s capabilities, enabling through-life modifications to address contingent operational requirements.

Selex ES currently delivers driver’s vision system, local situational awareness system, crew multi-function displays, self-defence weapon systems and survivability equipment for over half of the army’s heavy PM fleet.
