Rockwell Collins has been awarded a contract for supply of image generator systems for use in Boeing’s Apache longbow crew trainers (LCT).
Under the contract, the company will supply its EP-8000 image generators, which claim to combine enhanced realism and performance with a scalable, adaptable design that is capable of addressing the most complex training requirements now and in the future at reduced life-cycle cost.
Rockwell Collins simulation and training solutions vice-president and general manager, LeAnn Ridgeway, said the contract marks the latest example of providing reliability and innovation for the Apache LCT programme.
"Combining LCT requirements for high-fidelity, realistic and accurate correlated simulations of the Apache’s FLIR sensor imaging and weapons systems is a challenge with significant complexity,” Ridgeway said.
”Only Rockwell Collins provides the industry-leading image generator system and databases capable of meeting the discriminating needs of the Longbow Crew Trainer.’
The EP-8000 uses commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) field-programmable gate array (FPGA) technology to generate unparalleled scene density, environment processing and performance, and also supports new features and technology integrations over the lifecycle of the training programme.

By GlobalDataThe contract’s value and additional details, including the number of units ordered and delivery schedule remain undisclosed.
Comprising a two trailer system, including device and service trailer, the Apache LCT is a full-mission, high-fidelity flight simulator designed to provide training for individuals, crews and maintenance test pilots.
Capable of replicating the helicopter’s fully integrated avionics and weapons systems, including an advanced modem that transmits real-time battlefield information to air and ground forces, the trainer can also be networked with additional trainers for collective training capability.
The trainer is deployed worldwide, and is also used by the US Army for in-theatre training in Afghanistan and Iraq.
