The Australian Department of Defence’s (DoD) Capability Acquisition Sustainment Group has awarded a contract to Saab to modernise the wireless audio visual emergency system (WAVES) equipment for the Australian Army’s counter rocket, artillery, and mortar (C-RAM) system.
Awarded on behalf of the Australian Army, the value of the order has not been disclosed by the company.
A component of the C-RAM system, the WAVES equipment is designed to deliver early warning audible and visual alerts immediately on detection and identification of an incoming threat.
The C-RAM system integrates multiple army and DoD managed systems with a command and control system. Examples of C-RAM systems include the US’s Phalanx land-based weapon system and Israel’s Iron Dome system.
This capability safeguards fixed and semi-fixed sites from small, mobile and hard-to-find threats, such as rockets, artillery, and mortar rounds.
The company’s Australian subsidiary provides in-service support for the C-RAM system used by the Australian Defence Force.

By GlobalDataSaab Australia managing director Andy Keough said: “This contract ensures that the Australian Army can continue to deploy world-leading technology to help protect Australian bases and personnel.
“The contract also demonstrates Saab’s strong commitment to build and maintain in-country support capabilities.”
The Australian Army C-RAM system is based on Saab’s ground-based Giraffe agile multi-beam (AMB) radar.
The Giraffe family of radars are capable of detecting threats, such as mortar and artillery rounds, rockets, small drones, and fast moving aircraft.
Saab business area Surveillance head Anders Carp said: “This is further proof of Saab’s strong position as a C-RAM worldwide supplier with the Giraffe AMB as the surface radar system of choice for a number of customers worldwide, including Australia, United Kingdom, Sweden, and France.”
On Tuesday, Saab partnered with Lockheed Martin and Diehl Defence to develop the Falcon Air Defence System, which incorporated the AESA Giraffe 4A radar to detect incoming air threats.
