India and the US are conducting their annual, joint company-level field training exercise, Yudh Abhyas, at Chaubattia, Uttarakhand, India.
The Indian Army has deployed a Mountain Brigade of the Garud Division for Yudh Abhyas 2014 and the US contingent is represented by company and brigade headquarters from an infantry division of the US Army.
The two-week exercise focuses on counter-insurgency and counter-terrorist operations in mountainous terrain under the UN Charter.
Specifically, the participants are expected to hone their tactical and technical skills in fighting insurgency and terrorism in a UN peacekeeping scenario involving a brigade headquarters, an infantry company and a detachment of Special Forces.
The two armies will train, plan and execute a series of well-developed combined tactical drills for the neutralisation of threats that are likely to be encountered during UN peacekeeping operations.
Both armies have fielded advanced equipment for surveillance and tracking, specialist weapons for close-quarter battles with terrorists and explosives and improvised explosive device (IED) detectors, as well as the latest communication equipment.
