Lockheed Martin Team has selected Saft to supply advanced Li-ion battery systems to power joint light tactical vehicles (JLTVs) for the production phase of the programme.
The selection follows the company’s participation as the battery supplier for the team during the JLTV programme’s engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) phase, and successful completion of the government’s production readiness review for the JLTV in September 2014.

A total of 59 e6T Li-ion batteries were supplied by Saft for vehicle prototypes manufactured by Lockheed as part of the $66.3m JLTV EMD phase contract awarded by the US Army in August 2012.
Saft America president and Saft Specialty Battery Group general manager Thomas Alcide said: “This partnership represents the growing adoption of lithium-ion battery technology to support the increasingly higher power demands of today’s modern military vehicles.
“Saft is pleased to demonstrate the role of our battery technology in the advancement of military vehicle performance and capabilities.”
Designed to provide starting, lights, ignition, and silent watch mission capabilities, Saft’s Li-ion battery system will also produce critical mobile power to recharge personal electronics such as night sights and GPS devices.

Saft did not disclose the number of batteries ordered under the latest phase and their delivery schedule.
The JLTV programme is a multi-service initiative aimed at replacing the US Army and Marine Corps’ fleet of rapidly ageing high-mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicles (HMMWVs), which have been in active service for more than 25 years.
The programme will provide a family of vehicles that can perform multiple mission roles, in addition to providing protected, sustained, networked mobility for personnel and payloads across the full range of military operations.
