South Korea has launched a combined military division with the US to strengthen its tactical combat readiness against North Korea.
The new division will reportedly involve one South Korean Army brigade and the 2nd Infantry Division of US Army in Uijeongbu, located to the north of Seoul.
The two units are expected to carry out their normal duties during peacetime within the areas assigned to them.
The allies will activate the division based on threat perception.
South Korean Ministry of National Defense said: "The creation of the combined division is expected to help strengthen the Seoul-Washington alliance and foster experts capable of carrying out combined operations."
The US and South Korea will initially station the combined unit at Pyeongtaek in Gyeonggi Province, which is approximately 70km to the south of Seoul. It will be moved to the province by the end of 2016, along with the 2nd Division, according to a US base relocation plan.
