ATC Materials has been contracted by the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA) to produce an armour system exceeding the requirements of the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Insensitive Munitions (IM) standard.

Valued at more than $12m, the contract requires the company to provide a transportation protection system (TPS) designed to stop bullets and warhead fragments without any penetration.

The TPS armour is certified by DoD for shipping Mk 41 vertical launch system (VLS) extended range standard missile (SM) variants within transportation on-road weight limitations.

Using TPS, the MDA will be able to ship up to four extended range standard missiles, such as SM-3 or SM-6, on an unmodified flatbed truck.

No modification is required to the existing logistics infrastructure to accommodate the TPS, which will be manufactured at the company’s facility in Westlake, Ohio, US.

ATC is also developing lightweight armour panels that can be applied to existing munition containers as an appliqué.

The panels would provide protection compliant with MIL-STD-2105, can be installed easily and are durable for field use.
