Military coup attempt to oust government fails in Turkey
The Turkish Armed Forces’ violent attempt to take control of the country by suspending the constitution failed.
At least 290 people were killed and more than 1,000 were injured as a result of the 48-hour coup, from 15 to 16 July.
The coup attempt failed after the military-imposed curfew was strongly opposed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s supporters.
84 people killed in truck attack in Nice, France
A gunman reportedly linked to a militant group drove a truck into a crowd in Nice, France, killing nearly 84 people and injuring more than 50.
The ‘terror attack’ occurred during the Bastille Day fireworks at the Promenade des Anglais on Thursday.

Nato to invest €3bn in defence technology until 2019
The Nato Communication and Information (NCI) Agency planned to invest €3bn in defence technology until 2019.
The planned investments were expected to bolster Nato’s cyber and air defence, satellite communications and response forces, as well as command and control for complex multinational operations.
The agency will award contracts for the procurement of cyber, air and missile defence systems, as well as advanced software products.
UK to lift ban on women in ground close combat roles
The UK was set to lift ban on women serving in ground close combat roles in the British Armed Forces from 2016.
Female soldiers will be allowed to join certain units of the Royal Armoured Corps (RAC) from November.
Women will be able to apply for combat roles in a phased approach over the next three years.
UK Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said: “Women have already given exemplary service in recent conflicts, working in a variety of highly specialised and vital roles. By opening all combat roles to women, we will continue to build on these successes and improve the operational capability of our military.”
US and ROK to deploy THAAD system to counter North Korean missile threats
The US and the Republic of Korea (ROK) joined forces to deploy the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system.
The THAAD system will be deployed to ROK to counter missile threats from North Korea.
The decision on the THAAD deployment was based on the recommendations made by ROK Defence Minister Han, Min Gu and US Forces Korea commander general Vincent K Brooks, and approved by the ROK and US Governments.
US to deploy more troops to support ISIS combat mission in Iraq
US Defence Secretary Ash Carter announced the deployment of additional troops to support Iraqi forces in the fight against ISIS.
According to Carter, 560 more personnel will be sent to Iraq to help local forces that aim to free Mosul from ISIS.
The latest deployment will bring the number of US personnel in Iraq to more than 4,650, the BBC reported.
The troops were expected to provide support in areas such as infrastructure and logistics at an airfield near Qayyarah.
North Korea test-fires three ballistic missiles
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs Of Staff (JCS) reported that North Korea launched three ballistic missiles off its eastern coast.
The JCS claimed the country had fired the missiles from an area near Hwangju region and they flew between 500km and 600km into the sea, media sources reported.
The US military said that the latest launches involved two Scud missiles and one Rodong, Reuters reported.
Boeing to supply 50 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters to British Army
Boeing was to supply 50 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters to the British Army, as part of a $2.3bn deal between the US and UK governments.
To be flown by Army Air Corps pilots from the Joint Helicopter Command, the new fleet of Apaches can carry more weapons and use fuel more efficiently than their predecessors.
The first batch of helicopters was expected to be produced by 2020, and entered into service with the British Army in 2022.
Otokar wins €106.1m contract to deliver COBRA II armoured vehicles
Otokar was contracted to supply COBRA II tactical wheeled armoured vehicles to the Turkish security forces.
The €106.1m order included COBRA II 4×4 tactical wheeled armoured vehicles, as well as maintenance and support systems.
Otokar general manager Serdar Gorguc said: “Last year we were awarded the first two orders for Cobra II that we designed at Otokar with our own intellectual property rights and specifically against increasing threats.
“Armed with our engineering capabilities and R&D strength, we will keep on providing state-of-the-art solutions for our users.”
BAE Systems to produce 32 BvS10 all-terrain vehicles for Austrian Army
BAE Systems received a contract to build 32 armoured personnel carrier variant of the BvS10 military all-terrain vehicles for the Austrian Army.
To be carried out under a government-to-government arrangement with Sweden, the contract will benefit Austria’s mission in the European Union Mountain Training Warfare Initiative (EU MTI), which aims to enhance military effectiveness in mountainous terrains.
The vehicles will be manufactured at BAE Systems Hägglunds in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, with deliveries beginning in the second half of next year, and concluding in 2019.
