Germany’s unified armed forces Bundeswehr has contracted Rheinmetall for the upgradation of its Fuchs/Fox armoured transport vehicles.
The €135m contract follows a decision by the budget committee of the German Parliament to make the necessary funds available. As part of the deal, Rheinmetall will provide significant upgrades to improve the overall performance of the long-serving vehicles.
Work under the upgradation includes structural alteration of the hull, an increased number of storage bins, reinforcement of the vehicle exterior, and the addition of new seats and suspended seating in the fighting compartment to keep soldiers’ feet safely off the floor of the hull.
The current upgrade is expected to significantly expand the operational scope of these vehicles and they will provide improved survivability and various new technical features for the soldiers. Delivery will begin in 2017 and continue through to 2020.
The Fuchs/Fox armoured transport vehicles first entered service in the 1970s, with nearly 1,200 in service worldwide. They are currently being used in MINUSMA in Mali, Resolute Support in Afghanistan, and KFOR in Kosovo.
Bundeswehr has already fielded multiple variants of the 1A8 vehicle, including mobile command post and armoured personnel carrier versions, as well as a field ambulance, an explosive ordinance disposal (EOD) vehicle, and an NBC detection variant.
