Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles has secured a contract to modernise the German armed forces’ Bundeswehr fleet of logistic vehicles.

Valued at around €900m, the seven-year contract was awarded by the Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw).

Rheinmetall will supply 2,271 HX2 family vehicles to replace the ageing KAT I vehicles in the country, under the Bundeswehr’s unprotected transport vehicle (UTF) programme.

The company will initially deliver a batch of 558 trucks under the contract, which also covers the supply of tools and training support.

The HX2 family of vehicles are available in a number of variants, including cargo trucks and heavy-duty recovery vehicles, tankers and system platforms, and folding road and bridge-laying systems, Rheinmetall stated.

The trucks are powered by engines designed for outputs of up to 680hp, and feature a robust chassis design that enables the inclusion of additional protection elements.

With a heavy front axle load, the vehicle is able to handle a heavily protected driver’s cab large enough to accommodate three people.

The cabs can also be equipped with an optional NBC ventilation system, integrated command and control systems, remotely controlled weapon stations, jammers, active defence systems (ADS) and fast-acting smoke / obscurant dispensers.

C4I systems can also be integrated on HX2 vehicles without requiring major conversion work. 

There are currently 10,000 HX2 vehicles in service worldwide.
