BAE Systems’ Team Challenger 2 has revealed certain improvement plans for the British Army’s main battle tank (MBT).

The enhancements follow after nine months into the Challenger 2 life extension project (LEP) assessment phase. The Challenger 2 LEP seeks to extend the service life of the MBT until 2035.

BAE Systems campaign lead Simon Jackson said: “We will be giving the Royal Armoured Corps a Challenger 2 Mark 2, customised for the British soldier with the latest and best sensors, weapons control systems and crew stations.

“When a crew climbs into the Challenger 2 Mark 2, the first thing they will see is a brand new, modern Commander’s crew station designed specifically for the British Army.

"We will be giving the Royal Armoured Corps a Challenger 2 Mark 2, customised for the British soldier with the latest and best sensors, weapons control systems and crew stations."

“All systems, including lethality, sighting, situational awareness, battlefield management and survivability, will be run and managed from this integrated crew station.”

Team Challenger 2 is using the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) Open Architecture approach to allow future incorporation of further capability enhancements such as active protection systems, future electronic countermeasures, training systems, and enhanced decision support systems.

Jackson further added that crew menus and displays will have the same functionality as Ajax and will be equipped with improved survivability measures and sighting systems, better hit probability, and faster targeting.
