Russia is willing to help modernise and train the Cuban military as part of the Russian-Cuban military cooperation, according to chief of the Russian military general staff Nikolai Makarov during a visit to Cuba.
According to Makarov, the focus of cooperation would be to refurbish and replace Soviet-made military equipment that had been delivered to Cuba during the Soviet era. Reports Rianovosti.

“We inspected the condition of this equipment, and outlined the measures to be taken to maintain the defence capability of this country. I hope we will be able to accomplish this task,” he said.
The general also indicated that a Cuban request for assistance with training of military personnel would also be fully satisfied.
Diplomatic ties between Cuba and Russia have strengthened recently following the visit of council chief Nikolai Patrushev and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin to Cuba in July last year.
A group of Russian warships, led by the Admiral Chabanenko destroyer also visited Cuba in December 2008.
