Unmanned Vehicles

The task for the MOD’s Grand Challenge was to carry out autonomous recon of a potentially hostile area without risking soldiers lives. MSV working in Team Stellar provided a ground vehicle to provide detailed examination of threats, between obstacles routes and other likely problems for soldiers in hostile areas.

MSV was responsible for the air vehicle design and manufacture for the Team LM Fire Shadow prototype. Designed as a lurking munition Fire Shadow is a cheap and effective UAV designed to circle the battlefield and when its controllers detect a target deliver a warhead straight to it. On its first flight the TeamLM system found and hit the target.

Marshall SV’s SCOUT UGV designed and produced by MSV’s subsidiary MSDG is in service in the UK. MSDG provide whole fleet management for the system and are responsible for its through life capability management (TLCM).

A number of UAVs use MSV integrated ground control stations as part of the system. This WATCHKEEPER control position inside an MSV shelter communicates with the UAV via a communication hub designed by MSV.

When the MOD needed a digger to extract bombs from under ground and even under concrete it was not something that a man could be asked to do. They therefore turned to Marshall SV to turn an ordinary excavator into a remote controlled version so that the operator could remain a safe distance from the working area.
