As Defence Vehicle Dynamics (DVD) 2024 comes to a close, numerous key defence industry players from the UK and beyond have showcased their willingness and capacity to address the challenges faced by the British Ministry of Defence (MoD) as governments worldwide renew their focus on defence capabilities in an era of deteriorating international security. The complex and ever-changing dynamics of modern warfare, exacerbated by the proliferation of emerging technologies, including AI and uncrewed platforms, necessitate industry partners capable of delivering innovative and versatile solutions at scale to ensure clients keep pace with threats both conventional and unconventional. In this respect, Elbit Systems UK has become an increasingly valuable partner for the British Armed Forces, with their portfolio including a broad range of equipment and solutions designed to address current and future operational requirements at both the tactical and strategic levels. Leveraging technical expertise from both the British and Israeli industrial sectors to deliver tailored solutions to the UK MoD while also creating opportunities for export and collaboration with UK allies, Elbit Systems UK gives the British industrial sector a much-needed boost through its comprehensive approach to defence solutions development.

On display at the Elbit Systems UK stand were examples of several products designed for or currently in service with various elements of the British Armed Forces, with applications in areas such as simulation training, indirect fires, soldier systems, C4ISR solutions and uncrewed platforms. As one of the leading providers of synthetic training solutions to the British Armed Forces, Elbit Systems UK showcased its expertise in the field of gamified simulation training with several examples of digitised solutions for a variety of roles. The flagship component of Elbit Systems UK’s training offerings is the ground Maneuver Synthetic Trainer (GMST) system designed to train vehicle crews of Challenger 3 main battle tanks and Boxer armoured fighting vehicles. The GMST is comprised of high-fidelity driver, gunner, and commander modules connected to a virtualized training environment and capable of networking with other simulators to facilitate joint force training. The British Army awarded Elbit Systems UK with the contract for its Project Vulcan training modernization program in May 2023, with this decision having likely been informed by Elbit Systems UK’s work developing and upgrading the Army’s Interim Combined Arms Virtual Simulation (Deployable) system which entered service back in 2022 and received a contract extension in September 2023.

In addition to the GMST system, Elbit Systems UK displayed examples of deployable simulation-based training assets designed for both joint fires controller and artillery crew training. The artillery crew trainer features emulated military equipment for 81mm mortars and 105mm light guns connected to a synthetic training environment, with the joint fires trainer featuring similar virtualised training software with the ruggedised and portable form factor enabling rapid deployment and relocation of training assets. Elbit Systems UK’s expertise in these domains helped it secure further contracts with the British Army’s Royal School of Artillery and Air Ground Operations School back in September 2023 to supply both their Interim Indirect Fires Simulation (IIDFS) and Joint Fires Synthetic Trainer (JFST), the latter of which was announced in 2019 and serves training applications with elements of the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy as well.

Beyond the domain of simulation and training solutions, Elbit Systems UK also highlighted several products reflecting the global refocus on long-range precision fire capabilities. The firm produces a variety of laser target designators to enable more accurate targeting solutions for infantry units, with prominent examples, including the ATLAS, RATTLER XR and CORAL families of man-portable reconnaissance systems. However, artillery tactics and doctrines have continued to evolve rapidly over the past few years, with the conflict in Ukraine highlighting the speed with which new capabilities such as unmanned platforms have been integrated with conventional indirect fires assets. In recognition of these emerging dynamics, Elbit Systems UK also showcased an experimental target designation solution comprised of a stabilised laser designator mounted on a tactical quadcopter. Such systems could significantly enhance the survivability of special operations and reconnaissance forces on the modern battlefield by allowing soldiers to identify and engage threats from relative safety while only exposing the unmanned aerial vehicle to hostile fires, a tactic which has become increasingly commonplace on the battlefield of Ukraine.

As Elbit Systems UK remains focused on providing a holistic solution to modern defence challenges, both the targeting and training equipment are designed to work in concert with Elbit kinetic strike solutions such as the Iron Sting 120mm precision-guided mortar munition, a multi-purpose shell featuring modular guidance (laser or GPS guided) and multi-mode fuze options (Point Detonation; Point Detonation Delay; and Proximity Sensor) to ensure adaptability on dynamic battlefields. Other products on display which are currently in use within the British military included the XACT NV33 series of night-vision goggles, the TorchX battlefield management system and Iron Fist APS (Active Protection System) being integrated with allies including the United States, Australia and the Netherlands highlight the breadth of different solutions Elbit Systems UK provides for the UK armed forces and its allies, with their expertise underpinning the success of numerous ongoing modernisation initiatives. As geopolitical tensions rise and deteriorating international security place increased pressure and responsibilities on the capable but underfunded British armed forces, Elbit Systems UK continues to be a key industrial partner for the British Ministry of Defence.
